Historic Train Trail

Things began just as we had planned.  We began walking on the Historic Train Trail about 9:00 a.m.  It is an easy walk with a slight grade.  The view from the trail was outstanding.  The trail was constructed in the 1930 when Hoover Dam was being constructed.  The purpose of the train was to carry construction materials to the dam building site.  As with a lot of old train rails, it was converted to a trail.

We saw lots of people with their dogs.  I particularly liked this little dog.  He has his own running shoes.

These people didn't have to exert much effort to be on this trail.

These are concrete plugs that were put into the floor of the dam.  When the generators for the dam were installed, the plugs were removed and dumped by the side of the track.  The last plug was removed in 1961.

This is a picture of our RV park from the trail.

There are five tunnels on the trail.  One of the tunnels was nearly 100 feet long.  A sign told us that it took men blasting and working  24-hours a day for five months to make one of the tunnels.

We were only able to hike to tunnel number 3.  Tunnel 3 has been receiving some structural repair.  It was 2 miles to the tunnel so we hiked about 4 miles.  Carol had been having trouble with his left knee and as we walked, he really struggled with the pain.  We decided that he needed to go to an urgent care facility the get it checked out.

This is where we spent four hours getting it "checked out."  It turns out he has  a Baker's Cyst and some inflammation and swelling of his knee.  He was given a cortisone shot in his knee, pain meds, and a knee brace.  Hopefully, this will help with the pain he has been having.  We came back to camp and he rested while I did laundry.  As I was folding clothes, I saw out of the corner of my eye a beautiful moonrise.  I ran back to the RV to get my camera and below is what I was able to capture.

Depending on how Carol's knee is feeling, we are going to try to go to Valley of Fire State Park and maybe to downtown Las Vegas.
