Getting Our Kicks on Route 66

Despite the scary weather forecast for Sunday into Monday, we decided to stay at Albuquerque until Monday morning when we head west for Flagstaff.  We leisurely ate breakfast and I put something in the crockpot for later.  At 10:00 we drove one block south of the street the KOA is on to Central Avenue which is historic Route 66.  We planned to take the route to Old Town Albuquerque and then return by that same route.  We discovered yesterday that it is just as fast to take Route 66 to Old Town as to take the two interstates.  That route is more relaxing because there is less traffic and the old buildings, signs, general street scenes are much more interesting.

It was raining by the time we made it to Old Town.  We didn't mind because it kept the crowds down.

This is one of the oldest houses in Old Town.

If you eat Mexican dishes in New Mexico, you will have chili on the dish.  You will be asked if you want red or green chili.  If you want both, you say you want it "Christmas" which means both.

We made it back to camp around 1:30.  For most of the day, the sun played peekaboo with us and the rains fell off and on.  About 4:00 the winds picked up and the motorhome began to rock and roll.  It was very noisy inside.  Fortunately, so far, nothing has been blown off.  This is a picture of the two fences that we see from our front door.  The smaller fence surrounds the camp.  The taller one separates the camp from the interstate.  KOA's are notorious for being close to interstates but this is the closest we have ever been.  Just on the other side of the taller fence is I-40 and the heavy traffic that flows on it.  Our plan is to get up early, pack up, and get out of town, hoping to put the storms behind us.

The local news station had an update on 2018 Balloon Fiesta.  The final mass ascension scheduled for this morning was canceled because of the winds and rain.  A total 550 balloons participated in the Fiesta.  Of that 100 were special shapes.  Beginning tomorrow, the planning begins for the 2019 Fiesta.  If we could, we would come back for next year because it was so much fun.

Closing out for tonight and hoping we don't blow away tonight!
