The Long Drive to Atlanta

The next three pictures were taken last night from the motel.  The sky was so beautiful

We were up early to eat breakfast before we left Auburndale.  We had the car loaded and at the dining area by 6:00 a.m.  Unfortunately, the cook was late so the only thing we could eat was bagels, toast, biscuits.  We decided to leave because we had nearly 500 miles to drive today and needed to be on the road.  We decided to take Florida 98 to I-75 all the way to Kennesaw which is just north of Atlanta.  It was a nice road and we think it is better than the other ways we have taken when leaving this area.

The mist was laying low over the grass fields.  Most of the day was overcast so it was nice driving.

We crossed the state line from Florida to George at 10:10.

This moss-draped oak was in a rest area in which we stopped.  We did not see any more after we left Florida.

We stopped inn our second Buc-ees for gas.  Gas was $2.99 a gallon.  We like that!!  We found Buc-ee inside driving this truck.

There was a car wash across the street from the station  and also this dog wash.  We had never seen a dog wash at a Buc-ee's.  It must be something new.

This is the Atlanta skyline.  It has been nine years since we have driven through Atlanta.  We like to bypass it by driving 231 through Alabama.  Since we were planning to visit some Civil War Battlefield National Parks, we had to drive through Atlanta.  People tell horror stories about the Atlanta traffic.  We were surprised that even through there was six to seven lanes of traffic going both directions, we were never completely stopped.  The traffic moved even if it was slow.

The gold dome is the capitol building.

The summer Olympics were held in Atlanta a few years ago and I saw this and wondered if it had been built as part of the celebration.

We were glad to get out of the traffic and into a room at the Best Western in Kennesaw, Georgia.  After we got our luggage in, we drove to a nearby Golden Corral for supper.  That was a mistake because we ate so much that we were  miserable.

The Kennesaw National Military Battlefield is just down the road from the motel but does not open until 9:00 a.m.  so we can take our time tomorrow packing up.  We hope to see that battlefield and two more tomorrow.  It will be a busy day.
