Sweet Home Alabama

Carol was in bed by 9:00 but I wanted to finish my blog so I was up until 11:00. That is very late for me.  Despite the late bedtime, I was up by five and Carol shortly thereafter.  We ate breakfast at 6:30.  Breakfast was scrambled eggs, sausage links, bagels, fruit and juice.  There were other choices but these were our choices.  Because we were up so early, we were able to be on the road by 7:15.

We ran into some heavy traffic as we neared Birmingham.  At this point it was stop and go.

Of course, we did stop at a Buc-ee's.  We didn't need gas but brought some of their chocolate chip cookies...so good!

For all the years we have been driving through Montgomery headed for Florida, we have wanted to stop by the Oakwood Cemetery to see the grave of Hank Williams.  This year we were in the car so we stopped by the cemetery.  It wasn't very far off the interstate but it was no place for a motorhome.

Once at the cemetery, signs pointed the way to the graves.

If you would like to be interred near Hank, there are lots for sale.

These are the stones of Hank and his wife Audrey.

This stone read "Please do not desecrate this sacred spot.  Many thanks."  Hank Williams, Jr.

The top of the stone says, "Praise the Lord, I saw the light."

The top of Audrey's stone says, "Now I'm so happy, no sorrow in sight."

Right beside the Hank Williams grave were several stones of  RAF and French soldiers who died in the early 1940's.  This sign was posted to explain the reason for these stone.  We did not realize that men from England and France were training to be pilots in Montgomery but lost their lives during that process and were buried in this cemetery.

After we left the cemetery and were driving back to the interstate, we happened upon the state capitol.  All these years of driving through Montgomery, we had never seen the capitol because it is not visible from the interstate.  I snapped a quick picture before we turned to corner and it went out of sight.

We are staying at a Best Western in Enterprise, Alabama.  I thought I had made reservations at a Best Western in Dothan but in error I made it in Enterprise.  No problem.  The drive to Enterprise was a very nice rural road which we enjoyed.  Tomorrow when we leave, we will drive south to I-10 and continue on our way.  It will not be any more miles and we avoided the heavy traffic of Dothan.

We ate a lunch at 2:00 p.m. and then checked into the hotel.  We are settled in for the evening.  It will be nice to relax.
