Next Stop: Kansas

We packed up and were on our way to Hiawatha, Kansas at 8:00 a.m.  It was a beautiful day to travel.   The temperatures were in the 70's and no rain in the forecast.  As we drove west, we realized that it had been a long time since we had traveled I-72 west past Springfield.

I-72 West has some beautiful scenery.

Above and Below:  I-72 West.

On the other side of this bridge is Missouri and Hannibal.

We stopped for gas in Cameron, Missouri and spotted this car in the parking lot.  It is not as dirty as the car we saw in Davenport but it is a close second.

We crossed the Missouri River into Kansas.  Today we crossed the Illinois, Mississippi, and Missouri Rivers.

We are staying at a Best Western Plus in Hiawatha, Kansas.  It is very nice.  We will be here for three nights.

We decided to eat super at The Country Cabin Restaurant.  We were  very glad that it is located in the country outside Hiawatha.  We enjoyed driving the country roads through the fields of corn.

The Country Cabin Restaurant.  The restaurant did not open until 5:00 p.m.  We made reservations because we did not know how busy it would be.  When we got there our table was set with napkins, the menu, and mason jars of water.

This bear is the unofficial greeter.

Before the meal we were served a small loaf of hot bread with cinnomon butter.
This is Carol's meal:  Chicken Fried Steak, Mashed Potatoes and Gravy, and Corn.  He said it was very good.
I got a Queso-cheese and Bacon Steakburger with Fries.  The sandwich was so tall that I could not get my mouth open wide enough to eat it.  I had to cut slices of the burger and eat it from the end of the slice.  I could not eat all of the fries (although they were delicious) because it was just too much food for me.  Fortunately, Carol was able to finish them for me.

The restaurant is located on a small pond with cabins sitting around it.

I don't know who grandpa is but this is a memorial to him.

There are some beautiful big old homes on the main street of town.  This and the one below are the only two I was able to get a quick picture of.

Hiawatha is a very nice town.  It is famous for the hundreds of maple trees that line its streets.  In the local cemetery is a unique memorial with life-size statues of John and Sarah Davis who are buried there.  I have read about the memorial and we will check it out tomorrow or the next day and post pictures.  Tomorrow we will go to the Sparks Flea and Antique Market...the reason for our stopping here.  With a full tummy of good food and a long day of driving will give us a good night rest.
