I-70 Curse Strikes Again and Flight 93

It was a long day of driving yesterday so we all hit the sack at 10:00 pm.  About 11:00 p.m. I woke up to the sound of a beeping coming from the referigerator.  I recognized the sound as one that means the refrigerator is not operating properly.  I went into check on it and discovered that it would not stay on without beeping so I shut it off.  I have a book that tells me what the code displayed on the front means but did not want to look it up at that time so I went back to bed and spent a restless night wondering about the refrigerator.  Morning came and I checked out the meaning of the code; basically, we can't do anything to fix it.  It needs to be serviced by someone who knows what they are doing.  The new plan was to buy of ice chest and repurchase what we had in the refrigerator.  I didn't have much because I planned to eat out every day we were in Washington DC.  We don't know if it was just time for the refrigerator to die or if I-70 helped it along!  Anyway, we packed up and drove I-70 through the the top of West Virginia into Pennsylvania.  I followed the GPS to our campsite for the evening.  GPS took us on some two-laned backroads, around curves, and up and down hills.  It was quite an adverture.  The family was concerned that we wouldn't make it and now the running joke is for Memaw to never again use the GPS!

It was misty this morning but it made the road and mountains look so pretty.  This bridge is crossing the Ohio River into Pennsylvania.

One of the backroads we drove after we got off the interstate.

Finally...our campground.  It is very nice with well-spaced sites and tall trees surrounding the park.

This is the courthouse at Somerset.  I love these stately old courthouses.

This is the visitor's center taken from crash site.  The airplane came over the top of the hill, flipped over, and crashed 550 MPH into the field from which I took this picture

This is taken from the visitor's center and shows the panels with the names of those on the airplane and the boulder which marks the site of impact.

This perfectly describes the field into which Flight 93 crashed.

Looking down the panels with the names of those on the airplane.  No where in this site are the names of those who hijacked the plane. The heroes of this memorial are those on the airplane.

The boulder which marks the point of impact of the plane.  This ground is a burial ground so only family members are allowed to walk through this area and around the boulder.

Through this gate, family members can walk to the boulder.

Some of the panels contain mementoes.  I think this Supeman figure is perfect because the people on this plane were supermen.

Keegan was getting tired.

This is the Tower of Voices.  It is comprised of 40 different wind chimes to represent the 40 people who lost their lives in this field.  The wind was blowing enough for music to be heard from a couple of the chimes.

This is a very somber place to visit and remember those who sacrificed their lives to avoid another tragic crash into the capitol building or White House.

At the end of the day, we stopped by Walmart for our new ice chest and replacement food.  It was a good day.  We only have two hundred miles to our next site so we won't be in a rush to leave here.  Once we get to the new site, we will stay there for six nights.  That will be nice.
