Wednesday: Staying Closer to Home

It was another beautiful day to take in some sights.

Two White Herons enjoying the lake this morning.

Our first stop of the day was Rendleman Orchard established in 1873 and continues today to today's 5th generation.

Rendleman Orchard is more than just a fruit orchard.  It has evolved
to include flowers, bees,  goats, and chickens with nearly 80 employees.  It has been developed through "Agro-tourism."  Carol and I have never seen such a diverse and interesting orchard.  This is a big zinnias field.

Enjoying a view and rest.

Sunflowers

If you are sharp-eyed, you will see a Monarch Butterfly among the Zinnias.

At the entrances to the flower fields, scissors were available to cut flowers for take-home fall bouquets.

This water tower is painted to honor Paul Simon; thus, the bow tie.  Mr. Simon represented Illinois in both houses of the legislature and is buried in Makanda, Illinois.  We drove through Makanda and the town was described by Betty and Mark as "hippy and quirky."

We got back to our site around 2:30 and had time for a nap and downtime.  Late afternoon after it cooled down, we sat outside and enjoyed a breeze and view.  We saw these geese march in a line on the edge of our campsite down to the lake.  There were 11 geese in this line.

The geese took a swim.

Had our first fire of the trip.  Betty and Abram and Abigail stopped by for a visit.  We relaxed enjoying the fire and sunset.  As it was getting darker, a skunk came through the campsite.  He didn't seem to mind us and just kept on walking.  About 30 minutes later he came through again.  A skunk is a new kind of wildlife for us.  We had never seen a skunk before in the wild.

It was another nice day.  We enjoyed driving the back roads of this part of Southern Illinois.  For lunch we stopped at the  Giant City State Park Lodge.  The lodge was built in the 1930's by the CCC.  The food was delicious and the atmosphere of the lodge dining room was the cherry on top.  Tomorrow Betty has invited us for breakfast before we head out for another day together.  I am sure it will be another wonderful day.
