Turkey Run 2016 - Wrap Up

Our Turkey Run trip is over but I wanted to get some memories down and pictures posted.  It was a great trip in our motorhome.  We were in our favorite spot, #257,  It's funny how you get to recognize some families who like us come here every year.  For the most part they, too, camp in the same spot.  The weather was great.  Some days it was cool and we wore sweatshirts and turned the heat on in the evening and early morning.  Other days it was warmer but not warm enough to turn on the air conditioner.  Two days it rained but rain didn't dampen our enjoyment.  We figured that this is the ninth year we have come to Turkey Run and stayed for two weeks.  We are already talking about next year.  The dates will be after Columbus Day again so on April 13, I will get on the computer to make our reservations.  It is six months out but in order to get the spot we want, it is necessary.

One rainy day we camp upon this accident in Rockville.  I don't know how fast either was going but the result was this vehicle flipped over,

Rainy days aren't good for business in Bridgeton.  Some vendors stayed closed but a few remained open for those few buyers who were brave enough to get out in the rain.

Normally this street would be packed with so many people that a vehicle who have to inch down the street.

A sliver of blue sky peaking through the dark clouds.

This tree stands at the end of the street across from our campsite.  The tops were getting pretty.

We came upon this Amish buggy as we were driving the backroads.  We didn't see as many this year.

A field of sunflowers.

This was a road that we had never driven on.  The builders of the road decided to leave the tree in the middle and have the lanes go around the tree.  We had never seen this before but was glad the road builders had the foresight to save the tree.

This is one of the main streets of Mansfield.  Three days this week, we had walked along this street with hundreds of other people shopping and eating.  Again, this was a road we had never been on and were surprised to see that it went through downtown Mansfield.  This was the day after the festival closed and the vendors were packing up their wares.

We enjoy driving the backroads of Parke County.  We have driven several of the roads but this year we did find a few that we had never been on.

The farmers seemed to be behind in their harvesting.  This bean field looked ready.

The courthouse in Rockville.  For 10 days in October the courthouse is surrounded with huge tents and food vendors.  We did notice that especially Mansfield, the vendors were less.

Turkey Run - 2016 Mid Trip Update

It is Wednesday and we needed to visit a Walmart so we came to Crawfordsville and I can access internet here.  It is funny that when we drive 10 miles west toward the Turkey Run area, there is no internet access or at least, I can't access it.  We have shopped and are sitting in the Walmart parking lot so I can post.  Carol is playing cards on the I-Pad so he is occupied.

Taken at Hobson Family Fun Farm.

Hunter is practicing for the real horse ride tomorrow.

It rained today but the trail ride was not canceled.  Hunter is riding the horse he rode last year named Tar Baby.

Here they go.  Carol is riding Daisy.

After the boys went home, we found Elmo so he will finish the trip with us.

Every year since we have been coming, these people decorate this fence with pumpkins.  It look very petty.

The Cubs are playing in the division champion game this week but if they don't win tonight, it will be another year on not playing in the world series.

Turkey Run 2016

We left Decatur for Turkey Run around 11:00.  I drove the car and followed Carol.  We didn't want to use the dollie and it is only 2 hours.  We love the drive on East 36 to Rockville.  We checked into our spot at 2:00.  The motorhome is much easier to set up and so we were relaxing and enjoying the views from the camper.  The leaves haven't very much.  There are some trees that are beautiful but most are still green.   The weather forecast for Wednesday evening was rain and it was correct.  By dark it ha begun to rain so we stayed inside and watched a DVD...one of Carol's favorites:  The Outlaw Josie Wales.  Jason installed a sound bar so  we were able to enjoy hearing without straining.
About 10:00 p.m. we received a phone call from Peggy with the sad news that Carol's brother Darrell has been found dead in his home.  It was unexpected even though he has not been in good health for a while.  Evidently the person who checks on him had found him.  His only daughter lives in North Carolina and his Ex-wife was visiting family in the Philippines so arrangements had not been made.  Exactly two month ago my brother had died but his had been expected.  Needless to say we had a sleepless night.  Later on Thursday, we heard that he would be cremated and interned at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield.  No date at this time.   Carol and I have been to Camp Butler and it is a beautiful place, very peaceful and serene.

There is no internet connection in Turkey Run but it is Friday and we are on our way to Decatur to pick up Keegan and Hunter so they can camp with us this weekend.  The weather is supposed to be beautiful and we will have fun doing our usual things like the corn maze, hay ride and hiking.    My right knee has been giving me fits so I may not hike but the boys will certainly play in the canyon by our campsite.

Looking south from the camper.  One lone tree has some color.  Hopefully by the end of this two weeks, the view will be more colorful.
Site 257 - our favorite!

The view looking north from our site.  Last night this playground was full of kids of all ages.  The canyon the boys play in is in the treeline to the right.  The trees have hardly changed.

I have been having trouble with the internet on this so I having trouble with the internet so I will close.  Don't know when I will be able to post again.
